Lord Mayor’s visit for Prize Day, 1934. St John’s Hall.

Sister Teresa Francis Snelgrove. Known to the pupils as ‘Ambulo’, Sister Teresa Francis served the school for forty-five years, teaching Latin, RE and Greek.

Ambulo’s name was Sister Teresa Francis Snelgrove and she was one of the great characters of Notre Dame. A fearsome disciplinarian, she taught Latin, RE and occasionally Greek at the school for over forty years. She was tender in religion and would weep over the Passion of Jesus, falling to her knees in the corridor amid the hustle of changing lessons when the Angelus bell rang at noon, to recite the incarnation prayers and the three Hail Marys. She was to play a prominent role in limiting the damage to the school during the Second World War, clambering up a ladder to hose down the burning convent roof, and later kept bees at the hive under the school windows, donning a beekeeper’s hat and veil to attend them.
